| What the heck is a RICK? Well, first we have to start out with the legal definition (in most states) of the "CORD". "A CORD is a stack of round wood, about 8 inches in diameter, which is cut 4 feet long and stacked tightly, 8 feet long and 4 feet high. This equals 128 cubic feet of wood and the air between. " Then the wood is further cut and split. It now stacks much closer together. Here is where a small variation can occur as wood is said to "now occupy 85-90 cubic feet". We use the bigger figure (giving the customer more), so we use 90 cubic feet for the "processed cord". A "RICK IS 1/3 (ONE-THIRD) OF A "PROCESSED CORD", OR, 30 CUBIC FEET." Although this is not a ‘legal description’ and many others don’t even know how to figure it, this is how we define it. Our wood is usually cut 16 inches (stove length) -SO- our stack would have a "face" of 30cu.ft/16inches…. Or 22.5 square feet. We often bundle our wood in 5 cubic foot bundles for ease of handling, so 6 of these bundles make a RICK (30 cubic feet). Each of the bundles would have a face of 3.75 sq.ft. (540 sq.in.), a diameter of about 2.2 feet (26.22"), a circumference of 6.9 feet (82.4") and weighs about 300 pounds. No matter how you stack it, a rick of split wood is 30 cubic feet.
Then our stack could be: ANY SIZE THAT MULTIPLIES TO 22.5 SQUARE FEET. We like a height of 4 feet, so our stacks are 5.625 feet long. (5’-7.5") Or 6 foot long by 3.75 feet (3’-8") high.
As wood ‘seasons’ it retains nearly all of its size but looses the weight of the water. THIS SEASON >>> LOTS OF WHITE OAK AND NOW SOME HICKORY Special woods and lengths are available by custom order.
